Eight Questions to Ask Before Hiring Any Pest Control Company

Why this list exists

We regularly retreat properties that were treated months earlier by someone else. Sometimes the previous operator was unlucky. More often, warning signs were visible from the first phone call, and the customer had no way to recognise them. These eight questions give you that ability, whoever you end up hiring.

Questions about the people and products

One: who exactly will come to my property, and how are they trained? Listen for structured answers about technician training and supervision, not vague reassurance.

Two: what products do you intend to use, and can I see the labels or safety data sheets? A professional answers comfortably and specifically. Evasion here is disqualifying, because you have a right to know what is applied in your home.

Three: are your products registered for this use? Registered products applied at label rates are the foundation of safe work. Bargain operators cut costs with unregistered chemicals at improvised doses.

Questions about the method

Four: why this treatment for this pest? A good operator explains the reasoning: why baiting rather than spraying, why this needs two visits, why the source matters. A weak one offers the same fog-everything answer for every pest.

Five: what do you need from me before and after? Real treatments come with preparation and aftercare instructions. An operator with no requirements is planning a cosmetic job.

Six: what follow-up is included? Pests with egg cycles, bedbugs above all, cannot be cleared in one visit by anyone honest. A single-visit guarantee for bedbugs tells you everything.

Questions about accountability

Seven: what records will I receive? At minimum, a service record showing what was applied, where and at what rate. Businesses should expect station maps and audit-ready logs.

Eight: what happens if the problem persists? The answer should be specific: a defined follow-up window and retreatment terms, not a shrug. Companies confident in their method put their retreatment policy in writing.

Price did not make this list, and that is deliberate. Quotes only become comparable after these eight answers, because a cheap cosmetic treatment repeated four times costs more than a correct one done once.
