Trapping is the answer where poison is not acceptable or not safe: food production, schools, veterinary premises, and anywhere a rodent dying inside a wall cavity would be a worse problem than the rodent itself. It also gives you something baiting cannot, which is proof of what was caught and when.
Traps work as part of a monitored programme rather than instead of one. Placement follows the evidence along wall lines and runs, and a trap checked on a schedule is worth several left where nobody looks.
