Damp timber is the recurring theme

Sea air keeps structural timber wetter for longer than it stays inland, and wet wood is what borers settle into. In this district the places worth opening up first are the roof, the underside of an older floor and anything built hard against rising ground.

When the job is booked matters as well. A barrier or a timber treatment applied once the structure has had a chance to dry out lasts noticeably longer than the same job done into wet wood.

The guest house trade

Small hotels and guest houses along the coast see the same bedbug pressure as Galle and usually with fewer rooms to move guests into. Work is planned around occupancy with whoever runs the property, and rooms come back in a state a guest would accept rather than merely treated.

Inland stores

Away from the coast the district holds tea, spices and grain in smaller stores. That is stored product work, and the same rule applies as anywhere: a surface treatment protects the outside of a sack and reaches almost nothing inside one.
